Britain’s last true net maker

With the decline of fishing in the UK, Henry Cowls & Sons became more dependant on Horticulture and perfected their own range of Fruit Cages that have been refined over the years to the functional and practical range you will see on our “fruit cage” web page.

In 1988 Henry Cowls & Sons had out grown the old premises in Porthleven and moved 5 miles up the road to a purpose built factory in Helston, where all their knotted nets are still made in the traditional way, but on rather more modern machinery.

The great grandson and great great grandson of the original Henry are still involved in the business and take great pride in the fact that their illustrious forbear’s original company is still thriving and is indeed the only genuine net maker left in the whole of Great Britain.

About Us

Henry Cowls first set up business in Porthleven on the Cornish Lizard Peninsular in 1889 to produce nets for the huge Cornish fishing industry. Over the next 50 years the company started making nets to meet the growing demands of horticulture. In the early 1900s Henry Cowl’s customer list read like a “who’s who” of landed gentry, all wanting to grow their own exotic fruit at home.
