Fruit Cages
We know how disheartening it can be to invest time and money into your garden or allotment, only to have your crops destroyed by pests. A fruit cage offers the perfect solution by providing effective, humane defence against birds and small animals such as rabbits, squirrels and rodents, as well as destructive insects like butterflies.
We offer a range of standard sizes 2m tall, from 2m x 2m to 8m x 8m. We can also create bespoke builds tailored to your area, including adjustments for sloping ground. If you wish to expand your cage at a later date, we can supply additional poles and fruit cage netting separately.
Each enclosure includes everything required for installation including aluminium tubing, galvanised steel uprights, netting, fixings, clips, pegs and an aluminium door. Clear instructions are provided, and cages are carefully packaged to aid straightforward assembly.

Humane Aspects of Fruit Cages
They provide a sustainable and non-lethal alternative to chemical pesticides by naturally deterring pests. Additionally, they are reusable for various growing needs; the 19mm mesh ensures that essential pollinators, such as bees, can still access your crops, while allowing ample natural sunlight, air, and rain to reach your plants.
When properly installed, a fruit cage will prevent animals, such as birds, from becoming trapped or entangled, which can occur with loose netting.
Vegetable Cages Built to Last
By reducing pest interference throughout the growing season, a vegetable cage promotes healthier plant growth, improved crop quality and more consistent yields.
Engineered to withstand the unpredictable British weather, our garden vegetable cages combine galvanised steel uprights, selected for their strength and corrosion resistance, with lightweight aluminium crossbars and doorframes for easy access and assembly. Heavy-duty UV-stabilised polyethylene netting resists pecking and sunlight degradation, while UK manufacturing and high-quality materials ensure dependable, long-lasting performance.
Getting the Most from Your Fruit and Vegetable Cage
Our enclosures are ideal for protecting a wide variety of vulnerable crops:
Soft Fruits: Strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, gooseberries and blueberries, which are easily targeted by birds.
Vegetables: Brassicas such as cabbage, broccoli and kale, which need shielding from pigeons and insects.
Orchard Fruit: Cherries, apples and plums during their peak growing season.
To get the best from your cage year after year, remove the roof netting over winter. This prevents damage from heavy snow accumulation and allows birds to feed on overwintering pests in the soil. The side netting can remain in place. Store the netting in a cool, dry place and periodically inspect the frame for any debris that may have collected around the base.
Centuries of Expertise in Netmaking
With roots stretching back to 1889, Henry Cowls has spent well over a century perfecting its craft at a dedicated manufacturing site. What began as a trusted supplier of nets to the British fishing industry has evolved. As the UK fishing sector declined in the mid-twentieth century, we channelled our extensive net-making knowledge and expertise into the horticultural sector and beyond. Trusted by home gardeners, allotment owners, and commercial growers nationwide, our fruit cages are built on generations of craftsmanship and reliability.
